Restaurateurs launch forum to encourage food lovers to 'Eat Sheffield'

13 June 2007

A consortium of fine restaurateurs has come together in a bid to turn Sheffield into a culinary capital.

Members of the newly formed Sheffield Area Restaurant Forum (SARF) want to put the city on the map as a great place to eat and drink.  It will promote Sheffield as a destination that provides high quality food and service and shows a richness of choice and diversity for visitors.

It is a unique collaboration between some of the city's leading restaurants who more commonly find themselves in competition rather than co-operation.

Owner of Simply Chinese, Jerry Cheung said:  "The reason I joined the forum is because I would like to see Sheffield as a food and drink destination that is renowned in the UK and for our industry to become an asset for the city.

"I would also like Sheffield to be able to compete effectively with Leeds and Manchester and I believe that SARF will be instrumental in achieving these goals."

Apart from the restaurateurs', a host of institutions are backing the forum with their support and expertise in a city-wide commitment to culinary excellence.

These include Sheffield Hallam University, the council, Destination Management Partnership, Sheffield Tourism, Business Link and Creative Sheffield.

They will establish common shared objectives, key priorities and challenges to pinpoint the sector's strengths and weaknesses so that every business is working to the same standards.

To create their own branding, SARF has produced a logo with 'Eat Sheffield' as its theme and this will be displayed in members' restaurants.

Members also want to utilise and promote 'localness' by using local: labour, businesses, traders, produce, menu dishes and drinks.  By building up local brands and businesses, the aim is to help local people realise their full potential and this will have a knock-on effect of benefiting the local economy as a whole.

To celebrate this 'union' of talented food buffs and business partners, a launch party will take place as below. There will be live music, canapés and drinks for everyone to enjoy.  Journalists and photographers are invited to come along:

Date:    Friday, 15th June 2007
