Cricket Inn Win Best UK Pub Chef Award
A Sheffield pub chef wins at the 2008 PubChef Food Excellence Awards
Jack Baker of The Cricket Inn, in Totley won both the Seafood and Game categories in this prestigious culinary competition, picking up his awards at a lavish ceremony held last night, at The Dorchester Hotel, London.
Now in its fourth year, the PubChef Food Excellence Awards involve a six-month search for excellence and see the UK’s best pub chefs battling it out in a series of cook-offs to become category champions and vie for the overall title of Pub Chef of the Year 2008, which was won this year by Ross Williams of The Wellington in Herefordshire.
Judges of the Seafood category were wowed by Jack’s hearty chowder of British Isles seafood, praising the amazing combination of flavours and excellent presentation. In the Game category, Jack’s game knowledge and wonderful honey flavoured partridge won him the award.
The Cricket Inn presents 100 covers and serves an average of 1500 covers a week, with food Jack describes as, “Hearty, rustic and honest.” Jo Bruce, editor of PubChef, said: “The awards recognise the hard work and dedication of chefs who have helped put pub food on the culinary map. Standards were higher than ever this year and the category winners had to work unbelievably hard to impress our judges. Winning a PubChef Food Excellence award is a great achievement – winning two is outstanding.”
The PubChef Food Excellence Awards are run by PubChef magazine, the food magazine of leading pub trade newspaper the Morning Advertiser.
