STREET SMART

Street Smart2Nonna's & Street Smart Sheffield

Nonna’s is continuing its charity donations to local groups by participating in the Streetsmart charity (www.streetsmart.org.uk).  General Manager Daniel Jackson say's that a voluntary £1 will be added to the table bill at the end of the meal during the months of November and December. At the end of each month, the restaurant passes on the total money raised to StreetSmart who then use all of those £1s to support reputable charities in that city.

What is it?
Streetsmart is a UK charity raising funds for homelessness charities. It’s simple. Restaurants who sign up for the scheme add £1 to all bills throughout November and December. This is voluntary, so diners can say they don’t want to give it, or they can give more! Everything collected is distributed to charities working for homeless people in Sheffield. All central administration is covered by sponsorship, currently from Marks and Spencer, so every penny helps homeless people here in our city.

Restaurants who sign up will get a pack from Streetsmart explaining the scheme and how to operate it. A local organiser will ensure you have enough cards to put out on the tables to explain the scheme to diners. The scheme runs successfully in scores of cities throughout the UK and this year over £1m was raised altogether. Just 20 restaurants participating in Sheffield over the two-month period could raise at least £15,000 and probably a lot more.

How you can help
So what we need now is a few restaurants to come on board and get the ball rolling. The Sheffield Telegraph will give lots of publicity to the scheme, so there will be PR opportunities, as well as the opportunity to contribute something really generously and compassionately to Sheffield. And there’s so little effort involved. This will really contribute to the work being done to enable homeless and vulnerable people to rebuild their lives and regain their dignity.

As Streetsmart supporter Stephen Fry says:

Good food, good wine and good company enrich our lives beyond measure. Most of us don’t say grace these days because we don’t know who to thank for the inestimable pleasures of the table. Streetsmart lets us do a graceful thing. A simple thing. A kind thing.
