Hot food, fresh coffee, homemade cakes and an abundance of quirky secondhand books are on the menu at the Rude Shipyard a cafe come bookshop that opened on the Abbeydale Road in May 2009.
Proprietors Pete David and Sally Smith refurbished and fitted the shop themselves, after being inspired by similar cafes in America and Europe.
The food is seasonal, has a vegetarian accent and a focus on home-baked breads, scones and cakes. Specialities include chocolate Guinness cake, pão de queijo (small Brazilian cheese breads) and Turlu Turlu, a Turkish vegetable stew. The Sunday fried breakfasts have become a permanent fixture due to their popularity, but if you fancy something a bit different our Huevos Racheros offer a spicy alternative to the full English.
The Rude Shipyard also hosts special events, including open mic poetry readings, live music, book clubs and theme nights.
