Can you cook up a storm in the kitchen?
As part of Sheffield City Hall’s 80th Birthday celebrations and the Sheffield Food Festival, City Hall is set to host its first ever catering competition to find a local, creative, up and coming chef.
Having garnered an award winning reputation for banqueting and fine dining experiences Sheffield City Hall is offering the local community the chance to showcase their talents and transform their favourite dish into an option on one of the City Hall’s VIP menus.
Applicants will gain experience of cooking in a professional kitchen under the guidance of Head Chef, Andrew Ward, discovering skills to help improve their cooking techniques and friendly advice along the way. Entrants will battle it out for a place in the live finals hosted during the Sheffield Food Festival on Sunday 16th September. Plus the winner will get to experience their dish with a special VIP night out at a show of their choice.
As a local company, celebrating 80 years in the heart of Sheffield, we believe that the use of locally sourced produce is fundamentally important, not only to deliver the best possible quality food but also to support businesses, our local economy and the environment. The competition has been designed to celebrate these factors and we would like to see candidates interpreting this theme into their dish, where possible.
To enter, applicants just need to go to www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/80thbirthday
fill in an entry form and tell us what signature dish they would like to cook in an hour and why. Alternatively paper entry forms are also available to collect from the Sheffield City Hall Box Office.
The deadline for entries is Tuesday 31st July 2012 and will be assessed by Sheffield City Hall’s Food and Beverage Manager before going through to the live final which will be judged by the audience and a panel of judges.

DINERS at city-centre Silversmiths could learn a thing or two about conservation from owner Justin Rowntree…
The Arundel Street restaurant has just reopened with a whole new look after a major refurbishment that features reclaimed local materials.
And the freshly-varnished wooden tables have a special appeal for Justin and head chef Simon Clarke – because they were once fixtures in the chemistry lab at High Storrs School, where both of them were pupils.
Justin says: “I have such great memories of High Storrs. I’ve been inspecting the tables, trying to find a declaration of love I inscribed with a compass to a certain classmate in 1983.
“I haven’t managed to locate it yet and no names will be revealed! Sorry for the graffiti Mr Stevenson – I’m too old to be put in detention now, aren’t I?”
Co-director Donna Shaw says: “The recycled materials fit in with our theme of keeping things local – and ethical. They were sourced by Kelham Island design agency 93ft but Justin couldn’t believe it when he realised they were his old school desks!”
Silversmiths was launched two years ago with the help of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay. The new-look restaurant features a new cocktail bar, new menu and full rebranding.
To celebrate the link, Silversmiths is inviting any pupils, parents and teachers from High Storrs to dine with them during June and enjoy a complimentary amuse bouche with their meal – book on(0114) 270 6160, quoting ‘High Storrs.’

MASTERCHEF finalist Tom Rennolds was flavour of the month when he visited Sheffield’s Fancie cupcakes last week.
The visit was part of a Best of Yorkshire Food tour, to celebrate the cream of the region’s producers. Fancie, founded by Amanda Perry, was included as a regional food award winner.
Amanda said: “While Tom was with us, he had one of our Fancie CakeShakes – a whole cupcake blitzed up with milk and ice cream into a thick shake. He was completely blown away and is now going to try out his own version!”
