16 year old, Ruth Hansom, from Darlington cooks up a winner at Springboard’s FutureChef 2012 North East of England Regional Final Competition!

16 year old Ruth Hansom from Longfield Academy of Sport, Darlington area has cooked her way into the national finals of the Springboard FutureChef 2012 competition.
On Friday 17th February at Sheffield Hallam University, Ruth Hansom joined six young, aspiring chefs for the North East of England Regional Final. In recent months these dedicated young chefs have already outshone more than 320 of their peers in earlier rounds of the Springboard’s FutureChef – The Competition 2012. At the North East of England final they showcased their fantastic cooking, budgeting and time management skills.
Springboard’s FutureChef, is a nationwide culinary competition which is delivered in over 700 schools nationwide. The main goal of the FutureChef competition is to assist young people aged 12-16 to learn the critical life skills of cooking and understanding nutrition as well as providing invaluable insight into and inspiration for building a career within the hospitality industry.
The talented hopefuls began their “Let’s Get Cooking” challenge back in September 2011 and have already succeeded in two previous rounds of competition as they cooked for a place in this year’s final. On the day Ruth Hansom reigned supreme, impressing the judges, with her winning menu which according to the judges she delivered with the confidence of a professional.
Head Judge Norman Dinsdale said”
Ruth wowed us with her complete focus, highly organised and calm approach to working in such a pressured environment and at the same time, she displayed a real understanding of the techniques to produce great food. I’ve worked with professionals who would have been delighted to have produced the results Ruth did and she really stood out today. I’m very proud to be part of the Springboard Futurechef programme and it’s so encouraging to know that there is a new generation of chefs with the talent to succeed in this wonderful industry.”
Winner Ruth Hansom said “I am thrilled to have won. This is my 3rd year of entering this competition. Last year I made it to the National Final and came 3rd. I am delighted that I have another chance to show the judges at the National Final what I can do.”
Springboard Regional Manager Suzanne Chilvers said “Springboard’s FutureChef was developed as a result of research into young people’s ideas about the hospitality industry. Our research revealed that young people really admire high-profile and celebrity chefs yet surprisingly few genuinely consider a career as a chef! The FutureChef programme provides teachers and young people with a wonderful insight into the wealth of career opportunities that the hospitality sector.”
The 2012 Competition will culminate on the 26th March this year (12.30 – 2.30), with the National Final taking place at Westminster Kingsway College in London. This year has witnessed an enormous 7,000 students from throughout the UK participate in The Competition.
